Wow, I'm watching the webcast announcement of the partnership between Microsoft and Novell and I'm so happy I can hardly believe it! I'm a small stakes shareholder in both companies and happy from an investment standpoint but even more excited as a technologist and developer with a long history in development in the Microsoft platform and a more recent (past several years) experience in working with Linux having been drawn in by Mono, the open source project sponsored by Novell that allows me to use my Micorsoft .NET skills on Linux.
I've watched and marvelled as Novell has continued improving Linux through their own efforts and fostering and supporting open source communities through Novell Forge
My boiled down interpretation is that hey these 2 companies are still competing, but competing respectfully.
I interpret what Microsoft is saying is they recognize that their customers do want interoperability between Linux and Windows and so if you are going to run some Linux in your environment you are better off choosing Novell SLES because of their partnership.
I just can't help but believe that this bodes well for the Mono project and also for my mojoPortal project.
